President Obama leads celebration on Twitter for SpaceX’s rocket landing at sea

SpaceX’s first-ever at-sea rocket landing was trigger for a Twitter celebration that drew in President Barack Obama in addition to different space-loving luminaries.

SpaceX used its two-stage Falcon 9 rocket on Friday to ship a Dragon cargo capsule on its method to the Worldwide House Station from Cape Canaveral Air Drive Station in Florida. Minutes later, the rocket’s first stage guided itself again from the sting of area and settled onto an autonomous drone ship, tons of of miles out within the Atlantic Ocean.

Immediately astronauts used the area station’s robotic arm to grab the Dragon and bring it in for its berthing. In the meantime, the drone ship is making its means again to Port Canaveral, Fla., the place the rocket stage will likely be offloaded for testing and possible reuse.

Success! @SpaceX #Dragon put in to @Space_Station at 9:57am ET with ~7,000 lbs of cargo. https://t.co/ZpU8qIR8Y3 https://t.co/PTEDOYMdHX

The large image is that recovering and reusing rocket elements can result in large financial savings, if it’s finished rapidly and effectively. Final month, SpaceX President Gwynne Shotwell estimated that reusability could reduce launch costs by 30 percent. When you apply that to the $61 million checklist value for a Falcon 9 satellite tv for pc launch, that interprets to virtually $20 million in financial savings.

SpaceX introduced a Falcon 9 first stage again for a trouble-free touchdown in December. Blue Origin, the area enterprise based by Amazon billionaire Jeff Bezos, has executed related (however admittedly simpler) rocket landings with its New Shepard suborbital spaceship. However reaching the feat at sea, which SpaceX sees as a requirement for routine rocket reusability, took far more effort: The corporate’s first 4 makes an attempt fell in need of success.

The truth that SpaceX lastly did it on Friday drew a torrent of congratulatory tweets. Right here’s a sampling, beginning at the highest:

Congrats SpaceX on landing a rocket at sea. It is due to innovators such as you & NASA that America continues to guide in area exploration.

Congrats to the @SpaceX workforce & @ElonMusk! Method to stick the landing & ship #Dragon to @Space_Station. https://t.co/TCJCQljJBZ

From Apollo 11 moonwalker Buzz Aldrin:

Congratulations @SpaceX https://t.co/ULeMQLDlqG

From Chris Lewicki, president of Redmond-based Planetary Assets:

Looks like @SpaceX has a surplus of used rockets. If they’d fly them, @PlanetaryRsrcs would trip them. #FutureOfSpace #LightThatCandle

From Seattle tech entrepreneur Naveen Jain, one of many founders of the Moon Specific lunar exploration enterprise:

Congrats @SpaceX @elonmusk out of your neighbor @MoonEx for the flawless landing on the floating platform.

— Naveen Jain (@Naveen_Jain_CEO) April 8, 2016

.@POTUS nice achievement. @MoonEx will make you proud by landing on the moon and never simply on the floating platform? https://t.co/6aFO3dtBTK

From Bigelow Aerospace, which constructed the Bigelow Expandable Activity Module (a.okay.a. BEAM) that’s heading for the area station aboard the Dragon:

Thanks @SpaceX for getting the #BEAM safely into orbit. Lovely launch and barge landing! #BEAMmeupNASA pic.twitter.com/GtcWr6OdOb

A query about SpaceX’s launch (a.okay.a. SpX-8) from British astronaut Tim Peake, who’ll be utilizing the station’s robotic arm to convey the Dragon in for its berthing:

Puzzled by this taken final evening. Undecided it’s noctilucent cloud or SpX-8 path…any concepts? Uncommon pic both means! pic.twitter.com/jrYbwk8ROd

A promise from SpaceX’s billionaire founder, Elon Musk:

@levie Tickets to orbital accommodations, the moon and Mars will likely be loads lower than individuals suppose.

And a request from Darth Vader:

Pricey SpaceX,

Please construct a Loss of life Star.

Sincerely,

Lord Vader
