Seattle author Lindy West leaves Twitter, calls it unusable for ‘anyone but trolls, robots and dictators’

Seattle author and feminist Lindy West, one of many extra compelling and entertaining causes to stay round on Twitter, has ditched the social media platform, writing in The Guardian Tuesday that the service is unusable for “anybody but trolls, robots and dictators.”

West deactivated her account after 5 years, saying it “has been a machine the place I put in unpaid work and pressure complications come out.” Posting political commentary, writing jokes, answering questions and educating feminism 101 for free on Twitter ran counter to the truth that she depends on all of these issues to make a dwelling off Twitter, she stated.

“In return, I’m micromanaged in actual time by strangers; neo-Nazis mine my private life for vulnerabilities to use; and males get pleasure from unfettered, direct entry to my mind to allow them to inform me, for the thousandth time, that they might gladly rape me if I weren’t so fats,” West wrote within the characteristically blunt trend that has received her followers on-line and in print.

Whereas calling out abusive trolls and admitting her efforts towards them had been largely fruitless, West stated the actual motive she left is as a result of Twitter itself refused to do something substantial to guard its customers.

She cited what she referred to as the normalization of racism and sexual assault on the platform and lack of motion by executives which ultimately “greased the wheels” for Donald Trump’s ascendance to the U.S. presidency.

“I stop Twitter as a result of it feels unconscionable to be part of it — to generate income for it, take part in its profoundly damaged tradition and lend my identify to its legitimacy,” West wrote.

In the meantime, The Seattle Review of Books identified that one other well-regarded Northwest author, Sherman Alexie, introduced on Monday that he, too, was bailing on Twitter.

“Hey of us, I’m leaving Twitter as a result of its negatives more and more outweigh its positives. Thanks for the follows,” Alexie wrote in a remaining tweet.
