Xbox Live releasing nearly 1 million gamertags that have been inactive for years

The Xbox Live gamertag you’ve always wanted could very well become yours if it’s among the nearly 1 million IDs being released into the wild by Microsoft on Wednesday.

The company announced that gamertags from accounts abandoned during the original Xbox era will become available. The names were never migrated to Xbox 360 and have been inactive for some time, according to a blog post by Larry Hryb, the Xbox Live director of programming known as Major Nelson.

The gamertags will be available to Xbox Live Gold members with active subscriptions and at least a year of cumulative Xbox Live Gold tenure, Hryb wrote. The actual list of available names was not released yet, but the categories include proper names, pop culture references (entertainment, sports, gaming), types of food, geography and travel, science and technology, math and numbers, animals, and some of the greatest inventions of all time.

The release will start Wednesday at 11 a.m. PT and roll out over a 24-hour period. The best place to make a change is on Xbox.com.

Tell your friends, before they don’t recognize you anymore.
